PRACTICING EXCELLENCE: NPCC hosts more than 45 in-person workshops, forums, and online webinars as part of our training programming. NPCC’s training program is designed to give participants a firm grasp of the fundamental concepts within each of our Eight Key Areas of Nonprofit Excellence. We believe that the stronger organizations are in these eight nationally recognized management areas, the more likely they are to be healthy, sustainable, and able to adapt to changing times. Setting Goals and Measuring Outcomes

  • An organization’s ability to understand, measure, and communicate about its impact is more important than ever. Funding depends on it. So does internal decision-making. This workshop will cover what outcome measurement is (and what it is not), offering practical steps you can take right away.

Strategic Planning

  • This workshop will start with an overview of the strategic planning process and the various components of a strong plan. The planning process will cover all aspects of a nonprofit's work: governance, management, operations, finances, fundraising, facilities, and programming.
    Participants will also work together to conduct an organizational assessment and go through a refinement process to develop a set of "starter" goals for growth and success over the next three years. Each participant will leave with an understanding of how best to engage a planning committee to create a prioritized Action Plan including strategies to reach the goals delineated in a strategic plan.

Reporting on Your Data

  • You've clarified your outcomes. You've even managed to collect some data. Now what? Fundamentals of Governance

Board Engagement

  • There are several high-impact strategies that nonprofit executives and board leadership can immediately deploy to boost the performance – and thus, overall impact – of their nonprofit’s board.   • The Human Rights Law 101 presentation provides an overview of the New York City Commission of Human Rights and its mandate to implement the City’s Human Rights Law. The session will cover rights and responsibilities under the law, one of the broadest anti-discrimination law in the country, and the requirements and process for filing complaints. Protections against discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, as well as discriminatory harassment and biased-based profiling by law enforcement are covered. Managers, supervisors, human resources staff should attend this workshop to acquire knowledge about protections and obligations under the Human Rights Law, which should be helpful in implementing best practices in the workplace or when working with the public.

  • o Through the review of the Great Volunteer Management System (GVMS) text, and participation in training, participants will understand the importance of thoughtfully constructing an onboarding process to inform, engage, and inspire their volunteers. Participants will understand considerations for screening volunteers and which levels of screening are appropriate for specific volunteer commitment levels and roles. Participants will also have a framework of how to train their volunteers for skilled roles.

Succession Planning

  • All organizations inevitably face the transition from one leader to the next, and board members and staff leaders play crucial roles in helping their organizations navigate this process successfully. Clear and Consistent Communications

  • Do you know "that" from "which"? Whether to use the serial comma? How to punctuate dates and states? This fun, interactive workshop on grammar and style in the nonprofit workplace is designed to help individuals improve their own writing and move their organizations toward using standard style guidelines. Participants will learn the answers to frequently asked questions such as when to hyphenate and use semicolons, when to use "who" versus "whom," and how to style dashes, state abbreviations, and numerals. We will also discuss proofreading and editing one's own work to catch typical errors in writing.

    Your organization has a personality—a tone and style—that is reflected in how you present yourself and how people respond to you. Fundraising Regulations and Compliance

  • This workshop is a comprehensive presentation on charitable solicitation registration, what is required, and what it takes to be compliant. The focus will be on recognizing and managing state registration requirements. Participants can come prepared to ask questions and walk away with information on how to simplify the process. Organizations must register in any state in which they solicit donations. Solicitations can take many forms – from hosting an event, to mailing letters, to having a “Donate Now” button on your website. In today’s world, most organizations solicit in not one or two, but a variety of different ways and they often cross borders.
