Job Announcement

Communications and Outreach Officer

Reports to:                 Director of Advocacy and Partnerships

Latest update:            January 30, 2019

The International Legal Foundation (ILF), www.theilf.org, the leading global advocate for the right of the indigent accused to legal representation and a provider of legal aid services in countries around the world, is hiring a Communications and Outreach Officer to provide leadership and direction for the ILF’s communications. This is an exciting position for an energetic, outgoing and effective communicator who wants to support a leading international human rights organization. Driven by the belief that every person accused of a crime, no matter their ability to pay, deserves to be represented by a well-trained lawyer, the ILF has established pioneering public defender programs in Afghanistan, Myanmar, Nepal, Tunisia and the West Bank that are leading the fight for equal access to justice for poor and vulnerable accused. The ILF’s uniquely practical and effective approach focuses on incrementally developing the knowledge and skills of local lawyers through mentoring—not simply dropping in and providing one off trainings—while collaborating with government and justice sector stakeholders to advocate for systemic changes. In addition to its ground-up work establishing effective legal aid systems, the ILF also engages in high-level global advocacy, pushing countries, international institutions, and donors to prioritize legal aid as a fundamental human right.

Communications plays a key role in realizing the mission and vision of the ILF.  We are seeking a creative, strategic, and thoughtful Communications and Outreach Officer who will be responsible for developing and advancing communications strategies that: 1) advocate on behalf of our work around the world; 2) advance our mission; 3) amplify the voice of the organization; and 4) ensure alignment with our brand and values. The success of this position will include amplifying the ILF’s voice and mission as well as creating new opportunities for support, partnership, and innovation. Headquartered in New York, the Communications and Outreach Officer will work closely with the Director of Advocacy and Partnerships and the Executive Director to support the communications, partnerships, and fundraising efforts of the ILF.

Responsibilities:

      Work with leadership to guide and amplify ILF’s messaging across issues and positions;

      Develop, execute, and measure the performance of strategies for targeted outreach;

      Support development of written materials on the ILF’s projects and programs including publications, research memoranda, briefing information and other correspondence;

      Work to identify and produce compelling content to amplify the voices and experiences of our clients, local advocates and community members worldwide;

      Work closely with program staff to design and implement communications components of issue-specific advocacy, campaigns, and development;

      Oversee the organization’s digital communications and platforms, including its website, social media accounts, newsletters and event updates;

      Draft press releases, talking points, board memos, op-eds, and social media content that reflect the ILF’s positions, projects, and achievements;

      Coordinate assistance to the Director of Advocacy and Partnerships and the Executive Director in support of building and maintaining relationships with potential project partners (e.g. other international organizations and law firms);

      Ensure consistent ILF branding across communications mediums and country programs;

      Train and support the development  of communications staff in ILF country program offices so that they can better engage with, and eventually self-direct, social media and other external communications in their individual countries

Qualifications:

      A belief in the mission of The International Legal Foundation and a demonstrated commitment to social justice and criminal justice reform;

      Bachelor’s Degree required; Masters degree preferred;

      Minimum of 3+ years of experience and a demonstrated track record of leveraging press, social media, and digital communications;

      Knowledge and appreciation of how communications can be a tool for change;

      Strong messaging, writing, and editing skills;

      Experience developing and maintaining an organization’s voice and tone;

      Excellent interpersonal skills;

      Previous experience training others in communications tools and strategies a plus
