What We Do

The Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York (NPCC) serves as an umbrella membership and service organization for more than 1,500 nonprofits in New York City, Long Island and Westchester, including social service, arts, religious and advocacy groups – a spectrum as wide as the full range of “charitable” organizations defined by section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

NPCC acts as the leading information source and voice of New York City area nonprofits on sector-wide issues.  We support nonprofit organizations in three basic ways:

To read more about us, check out our most recent annual report; our most recent audited financial statement; and our three most recent IRS Form 990s: 2013, 2012 and 2011.

NPCC was founded in 1984 to contest a proposal by the City of New York to remove the charitable property tax exemption from many of New York's leading nonprofit cultural institutions. Our work was successful. NPCC later succeeded in obtaining exemption for nonprofits from New York State’s heating oil tax, saving New York nonprofits over $25,000,000 a year. Subsequent milestones included playing an instrumental role in the adoption of the Sop tax in New York State, without which New York State estate tax laws operated deterred many from making gifts to New York charities; the adoption saves hundreds of millions of dollars annually in contributions that might otherwise have been lost. NPCC also has coordinated many other efforts on behalf of New York nonprofits at the national, state and local levels.

In addition to government relations work, NPCC provides its members with cost saving programs and other services that are heavily used by thousands of nonprofits, improving the overall effectiveness of the sector (see Membership Services), such as:

NPCC is a member of:
